Jesus: God of Miracles - First Miracle

First Miracle: Water to Wine

On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.” “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” (John 2:1-5 NIV)

Mary didn't pay attention to what Jesus said she just believed he could fix the problem because her son was God on Earth.  In fact Jesus even says in the gospel of Luke: He replied, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it will obey you. (Luke 17:6 NIV)

Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.” They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.” (John 2:6-10 NIV)

Jesus didn't just make sure there was wine but it was the best wine. How many times does God answer of prayers better than expected? My husband and I prayed for a coaching job for him while he was still working on his elementary education degree. He not only got a job, but the sport he truly is passionate about, in a school district with a lot of athletic support, and a winning history.

What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him. After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days. (John 2:11-12 NIV)

Jesus had just gathered his disciples before this party. Some were John's disciples. They had just met him and I'm sure feeling apprehensive of their new teacher. However, because the witnessed this miracle it gave them an idea of how great Jesus was and who they were following.

The Big Idea:  Have faith it will be done and God will make it better than we intended.
